I was asked to design and develop a patio-courtyard style house on a sloped 75’x125’ site in Miami for acclaimed artist Doris Salcedo.

Overview

In generating concepts for the projects architectural form, I challenged preconceived notions, reconsidered basic elements, explored alternative space-planning approaches, designed spaces for public and private on a single site, and created an innovative design with blurred interior/exterior relationships.

My analysis would begin with an overview of the building's history, including its construction, use, and current condition. It would also involve an examination of the building's structural systems, materials, and design features. This would include a review of the building's modular capsule design, which was intended to allow for easy replacement and adaptation of individual units.

The analysis would also consider the social and cultural context in which the building was created, including its role as a symbol of Japan’s post-war economic and technological development. This would involve a review of the building’s reception and influence in contemporary architectural discourse, as well as its potential for adaptive reuse in the future.
